Thermal Screw Processors Design Standards

KWS Thermal Processors are designed to maximize heat transfer while reducing energy consumption. Single or dual screw systems are available for almost every application along with three types of heat transfer arrangements. KWS Thermal Processors are designed for high performance and low maintenance to reduce down time and overall cost.

KWS offers three types of Thermal Processors:

Jacketed Trough Thermal Processor

Jacketed Trough

Jacketed troughs create an enclosed path for the heat transfer medium to travel on the outside of the trough. Internal baffles are located throughout the jacket circumferentially to provide a flow path for the heat transfer media. Jacketed troughs are less efficient than Thermal Pipe or Hollow Flight arrangements and provide the least amount of heat transfer due to a static layer of material on the inside of the trough that results from the screw clearance.


Hollow Pipe Thermal Processor

Thermal Pipe

Thermal Pipe arrangement uses the center pipe of the screw as the heat transfer surface. Dual-flow rotary unions provide a flow path for the heat transfer media and allow both the in-feed and out-feed to be on the tail end of the processor. Trough loading must exceed 60-percent so the bulk material is in full contact with the Thermal Pipe.


Hollow Pipe Thermal Processor

Hollow Flight

Hollow Flight Screw Processors are by far the most efficient means of heat transfer for bulk materials. The surface area of the center pipe and hollow flights is more than double that of thermal pipe and jacketed trough. Hollow Flight Screw Processors allow the heat transfer media to travel through the flights and pipe in opposite directions to provide efficient heat transfer. Dual-flow rotary unions provide a flow path for the heat transfer media similar to the Thermal Pipe arrangement. Trough loading must exceed 75-percent so the bulk material is in full contact with the Hollow Flights and Thermal Pipe.
