KWS Provides Upgraded Offal Loadout System
General Description
Perdue Farms has existed over 100 years, as a fourth-generation, family-owned American food and agriculture business. Working with family farmers across the country, the grain that goes into Perdue animal feed is high quality and nutritional, producing only the highest quality poultry, beef, and pork.
The Perdue Farms poultry plant in Mt Vernon, WA processes in excess of 70,000 chickens per day. Around 50-percent of each chicken processed is for human consumption. The remaining portion of a chicken is called offal and consists of feathers, fat, blood, bone and organs. Offal is the by-product of a butchered animal that is inedible for humans. It is processed further or rendered for use as fertilizer, fuel, animal foods and even in makeup and explosives. Loadout systems are required to convey offal to trucks and send it to a separate rendering facility where it is further processed into usable commodities.
Design Parameters
- Product Type: Offal and Feathers

KWS Advantages
The existing offal loadout system was very dated and needed to be replaced. KWS was challenged with designing a new system to fit the existing footprint within the building but increase capacity. With over 50 years of experience in rendering, KWS designed and manufactured a completely new loadout system that doubled capacity and still fit into the same footprint.
KWS Special Features
The offal loadout system was designed and manufactured by KWS in accordance with rendering industry standards. Heavy-duty sectional screws mounted on heavy-wall pipe with continuous welds and 3-bolt drilling were provided for a rugged, long-lasting system. Troughs with abrasion-resistant liners are also standard for the industry. Low speed drives delivered high torque for powering through upset conditions.
KWS worked together with the installation and construction company from the very beginning of the project to ensure that the new KWS loadout system was designed properly to meet Purdue’s needs and would also fit within the space constraints of the existing building. To ensure there were no problems, KWS personnel were onsite to oversee the installation that was performed over Easter weekend. Engineering and field services set KWS apart from the competition.
Testimonial
"Thanks to KWS for not only designing our new loadout system but for also being here to oversee the installation. We have been able to increase our throughput drastically without altering the current building size."
