General Description
The project involved modifications and additions to the existing Waste Reclamation Facility’s Solids Handling Facilities including biosolids processing improvements. The municipality required dewatered biosolids be transferred from one Alfa Laval model ALDEC 30 centrifuge to a dumpster in the loading bay. The conveying system consisted of two shaftless conveyors and a manually actuated slide gate. A fixed shaftless conveyor transferred biosolids from the centrifuge to an inclined and pivoting screw conveyor. This inclined loading conveyor pivots around the inlet and is mounted to structural supports on wheels. The inclined loading conveyor can be moved manually by plant staff to evenly distribute the biosolids in the dumpster.
Design Parameters
- Type of Material: Dewatered Biosolids
- Material Density: 45-62 Lbs. per Cubic Foot
- Solids, % by weight: 18-35%
- Capacity: 0.75 wet tons per hour
KWS Advantages
KWS provided custom designed shaftless conveyors and slide gate that met the customers need for a low-cost system for transporting and evenly loading biosolids into dumpsters. The system capacity allowed for the operator to manually reposition the inclined conveyor at 3 to 4 hour intervals with minimal effort to evenly load the dumpster. The dimensional requirements of the building and interfacing equipment meant that the space for the conveyors was limited. The centrifuge and ancillary equipment was designed into a skid mount and the space available for the conveyors was limited. KWS provided engineering knowledge and design expertise utilizing 3D solid modeling to ensure that the equipment fit exactly to the customer’s requirements. Installation was accomplished quickly and efficiently which allowed the Contractor to deliver on time and within budget.
KWS supported the installation, commissioning and training by providing a qualified and registered engineer familiar with the project, design requirements and equipment delivered.
Special Features
The inclined loading conveyor was designed to allow plant staff to move it with minimal effort. This feature is used to distribute material in the dumpster for more efficient loading and also used to move the equipment out of the way while dumpsters are changed. KWS provided our exclusive 340 Brinell hardness (BHN) spirals for the shaftless screw conveyors. The shaftless spiral is the critical component in all shaftless screw conveyors. The KWS-340 shaftless spirals are the hardest and strongest spirals in the industry. They are designed to outlast any other shaftless spiral by at least a factor of 2.
Testimonial
"The KWS solution met the Operator’s needs and the Owner’s budget. The system contributed to the design of a more compact dewatering building and we now have a robust and flexible system that is easy to use and maintain. We appreciate the experience and engineering expertise that KWS brought to the table and hope to work with them again in the near future."
