KWS Designs and Manufactures Specialty Mixing Screws for Kingsford Charcoal
Challenge
Charcoal is made from a mixture of wood char, sawdust, limestone, starch and binding agents that is formed under high pressure into a briquet. Specially designed screws are used to mix the various ingredients together before the briquetting process. Kingsford Charcoal needed two large diameter mixing screws as replacements to existing units that could fail at any moment. Timing was critical as installation crews were scheduled for a specific shutdown date.
KWS Advantage
KWS has worked on thousands of bulk material handling applications. Mixing of bulk materials is very common and screw conveyors are ideal for continuous mixing applications. Design of the mixing screws was critical for proper mixture and plant operation. An old mixing screw was measured and examined to determine design improvements. KWS used abrasion resistant materials on the new screws to greatly increase uptime. All welding was performed by KWS ASME certified welders. The new mixing screws were designed, manufactured and delivered ahead of schedule. Installation was flawless and the plant was back in operation within a day of installation.
