Extreme Temperature Screw Conveyor for Kingsford Charcoal
Introduction
Kingsford is part of The Clorox Company and is recognized as the leading U.S. charcoal brand. Kingsford Original Charcoal has been made in the USA since 1920, and Belle, Missouri is one of Kingsford’s U.S. manufacturing locations. The Kingsford plant in Belle contacted Motion in Columbia, Missouri to provide a new screw conveyor for a demanding high-temperature process.
New Screw is Mounted on Large Diameter Pipe to Span Full Conveyor Length
Challenge
Kingsford required the new screw conveyor to withstand process temperatures up to 1200-degrees F. At this high temperature, protecting the trough, shafts, bearings, seals, and drive components was critical. Kingsford also required that the interior surfaces of the trough and trough ends be lined with refractory tile to insulate the trough and help protect the conveyor from extreme heat.

KWS designed and manufactured a highly engineered screw conveyor to meet Kingsford’s requirements. An oversized trough provided the necessary clearance for installation of the refractory lining. High-temperature paint was applied to the conveyor to withstand the demanding operating environment.
Bolt-in baffles were located near the drive and tail ends of the conveyor to prevent hot bulk material from migrating to the shafts. The baffles reduce heat transfer to the bearings, seals, and drive, extending component life and improving reliability. KWS provided a Made-to-Order solution engineered specifically for the extreme temperature requirements of the application.
