Burkesville Wastewater Treatment Plant
Burkesville, KY

General Description

Burkesville, KY is a small town of 1,600 people located in Cumberland County and on the Cumberland River. The Burkesville Wastewater Treatment Plant services Burkesville and the surrounding area. Improvements were needed at the plant that included replacing the existing grit removal equipment, replacing two existing 28-foot diameter secondary clarifier sludge rake squeegees and drive mechanisms, and other auxiliary equipment. KWS provided a replacement screw conveyor to transfer screenings from three existing bar screens and grit from an existing grit conveyor into a roll off container.

KWS Advantages

An engineer from KWS went to site to take measurements of the existing system and determine the requirements of the application. Working closely with The Herrick Company, KWS utilized the latest 3D CAD modeling techniques to model the complete conveyor inside the concrete channel to determine the accurate height and geometry of the inlet chutes to fit in the very confined space. As a result, the installation phase went very smoothly. A KWS representative performed equipment startup and operator training before the system was put into successful service.

KWS Special Features

KWS shaftless screw conveyors are designed to convey wet bulk materials such as screenings and grit. The KWS-350 shaftless spiral is the hardest and toughest in the industry and resists wear from abrasive grit. ½-inch thick UHMW liners are designed to last many years before replacement. All KWS shaftless screw conveyors come standard with our exclusive one-piece flanged drive shaft. The drive shaft is machined from solid bar stock and is guaranteed for life.

To protect the equipment and operators, the KWS shaftless screw conveyor is fitted with a cable safety stop control unit. A cable safety stop unit provides quick shutoff of a conveyor in an emergency by pulling a cable that is externally mounted around all sides of the conveyor and connected to a control unit.

The shaftless screw conveyor is also equipped with a Milltronics zero-speed sensor. The zero-speed sensor warns of equipment malfunction through detection of speed change or zero speed and signals through contacts to shut down machinery in case of a slowdown or failure. The switch is equipped with a time delay and a speed adjustment feature that will help ensure the motion alarm trips only when the desired speed is not reached within the desired time delay.

KWS supplied a 4” drain equipped with a 150# ANSI flange connection to flush out any excess material when cleaning the equipment. The drain is located at the lower point of the conveyor on the non-carrying side to reduce any plugging.

Testimonial

"The KWS equipment is working great with no issues. The installation went very smoothly. Thanks for the upfront work to measure and create a working model of the system. This really helped with fit up in the field."
