Shaftless Screw Conveyor for Walnut Creek Water Reclamation Facility Expansion

General Description

Rapid demographic expansion in Henry County, Georgia has placed extraordinary demands on municipal infrastructure systems. Recognizing the critical need for enhanced wastewater management capabilities, the Henry County Water Authority initiated an ambitious $182 million capital improvement program focused on expanding treatment capacity and implementing advanced processing technologies at the Walnut Creek Water Reclamation Facility.

The facility’s 6-million-gallon-per-day capacity enhancement was executed through an aggressive 32-month implementation timeline, featuring simultaneous construction activities across more than 20 distinct areas of improvement. The comprehensive upgrades integrate sophisticated wastewater treatment technologies engineered to achieve stringent effluent quality standards required for South River discharge compliance.

Central to the facility’s technological transformation are three flagship systems: a membrane biological reactor (MBR) treatment plant delivering superior filtration performance, an Autothermal Thermophilic Aerobic Digestion System (ATAD) providing innovative solids processing, and a Solar Sludge Dryer representing one of the East Coast’s largest renewable energy-powered dewatering installations. Together, these integrated solutions establish a foundation for sustained operational efficiency and environmental stewardship.

KWS collaborated with Trillium Flow Technologies to deliver a comprehensive grit removal system designed to transfer grit from three classifiers and into a screenings washer compactor.

KWS Advantages

KWS engineering personnel engaged in extensive technical collaboration with Trillium Flow Technologies’ design team to engineer a comprehensive material handling system. Leveraging advanced 3D CAD modeling technology, KWS developed precise conveyor specifications that ensured optimal positioning of three inlet chutes beneath the centrifuge units while maintaining proper alignment with downstream processing equipment. This design approach facilitated seamless installation execution. Upon completion, a KWS field service representative conducted comprehensive equipment commissioning and operator training protocols, resulting in successful system integration and operational deployment.

KWS Special Features

KWS shaftless spirals represent industry-leading durability and reliability, engineered to deliver sustained performance over extended operational periods. The conveyor systems incorporate heavy-duty ultra-high molecular weight (UHMW) polyethylene liners specifically designed to withstand wear and abrasion from demanding applications. All external components, including conveyor assemblies, inlet chutes, and structural support frameworks, are fabricated from 304 stainless steel to ensure superior corrosion resistance and long-term material integrity.

KWS shaftless screw conveyors feature our proprietary one-piece flanged drive shaft as standard equipment. This drive shaft is precision-machined from solid bar stock and backed by a lifetime warranty. For enhanced safety and equipment protection, each shaftless screw conveyor incorporates a cable-actuated emergency stop system. This safety mechanism enables immediate conveyor shutdown during emergency situations through an externally mounted cable that runs along the conveyor perimeter and interfaces with a centralized control unit, providing operators with accessible emergency response capability from any position along the equipment.

KWS provided a 4-inch drainage system featuring a 150# ANSI flanged connection to facilitate complete material evacuation during equipment cleaning and maintenance operations. The drain assembly is strategically positioned at the conveyor’s lowest elevation point on the non-carrying side to minimize potential material accumulation and prevent system blockages.
