KWS Advantages
KWS collaborated closely with W.R. Grace to develop a direct replacement for the existing conveyor while incorporating the additional features requested by the customer. KWS supplied 3D models of the screw conveyor to integrate into the facility layout and verify that there were no dimensional conflicts or installation interferences. As a result, the equipment was installed seamlessly, minimizing downtime and ensuring a smooth project execution.
KWS Special Features
The new KWS screw conveyor was constructed from 316 stainless steel with all product-contact surfaces continuously welded and polished smooth to a 150-grit finish, eliminating any pits, cracks, or crevices. This finish makes the conveyor easier to clean, minimizes the risk of bulk material contamination, and helps maintain optimal process hygiene. The smooth, uniform interior surface also improves material flow and reduces the potential for product buildup during operation.
To improve access without compromising safety, KWS supplied removable clamp-style covers, each fitted with an interlock safety switch. A keyed actuator mounted on the cover’s leading edge trips the safety contacts the moment a cover is opened. This tamper-resistant design guards against accidental startups and unauthorized access, keeping operators safer during inspection, cleaning, and maintenance.
To further protect operators, KWS added shaft guards at both the drive and tail ends of the conveyor, enclosing the rotating shafts and reducing the risk of accidental contact. With more than 45 years of experience in bulk material handling, KWS engineers shaft guarding solutions for a wide range of applications, all built to meet OSHA and MSHA (Mine Safety and Health Administration) safety requirements.
