General Description
The City of Victoria Wastewater Treatment Division operates and maintains two wastewater treatment plants, the Regional Plant and the Odem Street Plant. The Regional Plant is permitted to treat up to 9.6 million gallons per day (MGD) using a complete mix, activated sludge process. This plant also accepts approved hauled waste such as septic tank and grit trap waste. The plant underwent a project to improve its dewatering process which included replacing one of their existing belt filter presses (BFP No. 1) with a new belt filter press, replacing existing belt conveyors with one new screw conveyor and other associated improvements. KWS Environmental provided the new screw conveyor to transfer sludge from BFP No. 1 to truck load out.
Design Parameters
- Product Type: Dewatered Biosolids
- Material Density: 65 Lbs. per Cubic Foot
- Capacity: 250 Cubic Feet per Hour
- Duty: 5 days a week, 8 Hours per Day
KWS Advantages
KWS Environmental partnered with BDP Industries, the belt filter press manufacturer and the local manufacturer’s representative early in the design phase of the project. KWS only works with the most knowledgeable manufacturer’s representatives in the industry to ensure the end users and tax payers receive the best solution and value. The partnership provided detailed technical information to CDM Smith.
The KWS/BDP team was selected by the contractor as the best dewatering package for the application. KWS and BDP coordinated all interfaces to the belt filter press, building, and truck loadout utilizing 3D Autodesk Inventor. The local manufacturer’s representative provided equipment commissioning along with a degreed mechanical engineer from KWS. The startup of the belt filter press and screw conveyor went flawlessly with no issues.
Special Features
KWS Environmental provided a shaftless conveyor with abrasion resistant spiral material and Xylethon liners to handle the sticky, sluggish biosolids. Xylethon is a dense engineered plastic with excellent wear resistance and low coefficient of friction.
KWS designed the sludge inlet chute in coordination with BDP Industries to ensure dewatered biosolids would discharge properly with no spillage. KWS designed the conveyor to start even when completely full of dewatered biosolids. The drive unit was located at ground level for easy maintenance access. The calculations for the conveyor spiral design were stamped by a PE-licensed KWS engineer. KWS has a larger team of qualified engineers than any other conveyor manufacturer in the industry.
Testimonial
