General Description

The Central Avenue Wastewater Treatment Plant for the Burlington Township is in Burlington County, New Jersey. The average daily design flow is 1.26 million gallons per day (MGD) with a permitted flow of 3.65 MGD. The plant underwent an upgrade to replace worn-out grit removal equipment. The new project consisted of replacement of a grit pump, cyclone and grit classifier, along with associated plumbing and electrical work.

The old classifier was replaced with a KWS Environmental solution that included a hydro-cyclone and grit classifier. The hydro-cyclone receives flow from the grit pump and separates virtually all the grit from the water. The de-gritted water flows by gravity to further treatment. The concentrated grit exits the hydro-cyclone into the KWS classifier. The heavy grit falls out of solution by gravity and is conveyed to a dumpster for disposal. The de-gritted water is then pumped to further treatment.

New KWS Grit Classifier Provides Very Effective Treatment of Wastewater

KWS Advantages

The existing classifier was constructed from carbon steel and the removal screw rotated at a speed that prevented removal of fine solids that settled to the bottom of the tank. There was severe corrosion of the carbon steel classifier. KWS provided a grit tank constructed from 304 stainless steel with a slower screw speed to facilitate grit removal. An experienced engineer from KWS provided design expertise to the consulting engineer so the new system was properly designed.

The design submittal process went smoothly and all dimensions for the new classifier were accurate with only minor questions to be answered. The new KWS grit classifier was installed in the tight space with no fit-up issues. A KWS-trained engineer conducted installation verification, startup, operations & maintenance training.

Special Features

The new KWS grit classifier fit perfectly in the existing space available. The KWS hydro-cyclone reduced the size needed for the classifier tank. Since influent water is highly acidic, KWS manufactured the new classifier from 304 stainless steel to eliminate corrosion issues. KWS used a shaftless spiral to limit clearances and improve conveying efficiency. The KWS-350 micro-alloy shaftless spiral is the strongest and toughest spiral on the market and designed for highly abrasive applications. The troughs were lined with ½-inch thick ceramic tiles, ensuring unlimited life and never needing replacement. The new KWS classifier was fully enclosed and water-tight to prevent leakage. All necessary pipe connections to interface with the plant plumbing and a spray system to wash down and remove odors for the grit were included.
