General Description

Over half of the world’s population, approximately 4.5 billion people, do not have access to clean drinking water and proper sanitation facilities. Poor sanitation is a major contributor to the spread of disease. Building water treatment systems and infrastructure in certain areas of the world is very difficult and current technologies are not sufficient for solving the problem. New technologies are being developed that are practical, cost-effective and modular in design and construction. The Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation is working with entrepreneurs and scientists to create water and sewerage treatment systems that fit the exact needs of developing countries.

Sedron Technologies is an industry leader in the development of modular, decentralized waste treatment systems. The process uses a Janicki Omni Processor that kills pathogens while recovering valuable resources from biosolids and other waste streams. The Omni Processor processes waste without piped water, sewer or electrical connections and can transform waste into useful resources such as energy and water. The process starts with biosolids being fed to a dryer where moisture is removed. The dried solid waste is then burned to produce heat in a boiler to generate steam and power a turbine generator to produce electricity. The electricity powers the processor with excess electricity sold back to the power grid.

Cantilever Screw Conveyor for Injecting Dried Biosolids into Boiler for Electricity Generation - KWS Manufacturing

KWS Cantilevered Screw Conveyor Injects Dried Biosolids, Silica Sand and Hydrated Lime into Boiler

  4. Duty: 24 hours per Day, 7 Days per Week

KWS Advantages

Working together, Sedron Technologies and KWS successfully developed a process for metering and conveying various bulk materials for the waste treatment process. With over 100,000 installations and a track record of handling thousands of bulk materials, KWS can solve almost any bulk material handling problem. Specifically, a cantilever screw conveyor was required to inject a combination of dried biosolids, silica sand and hydrated lime into a boiler for generation of electricity. Using the latest in 3D modeling technology, KWS provided a quick engineered solution that fit seamlessly into the process.

Special Features

The KWS cantilevered screw conveyor was constructed from 310 stainless steel to withstand the high intense heat of 1600-degrees F in the boiler. Carbon steel construction was used in the ambient temperature areas to reduce the overall cost of the unit. The cantilevered screw was supported by a double bearing arrangement on the drive end, making maintenance easier and safer to perform. KWS designed for thermal expansion by fixing the drive end and letting the screw and trough expand as needed into the boiler feed area. The screw and drive shaft were designed for operation at high temperature with high bending and torsional loads since the screw is only supported on the drive end. High temperature paint and gasketing were used to protect the carbon steel components and drive.

Testimonial

"The quality of the KWS cantilevered screw conveyor is fantastic and it has lasted much longer than we anticipated. KWS did a great job ensuring we got our money’s worth."
