Belt Conveyor for Transferring Dewatered Biosolids and Grit East Bank WWTP in Jefferson Parish, LA
East Bank Wastewater Treatment Plant (EBWWTP)
Jefferson Parish, LA
General Description
East Bank Wastewater Treatment Plant (EBWWTP) is in Jefferson Parish, LA about 10 miles west of New Orleans. The facility treats an average wastewater flow of 56 million gallons per day (MGD) and services over 400,000 residents of Jefferson Parish. The plant has been in operation since the 1960’s and has undergone major improvements through the years.
An existing and problematic belt conveyor needed replacement at the facility. Pivotal Engineering in New Orleans provided the consulting engineering on the upgrade project and worked closely with KWS Environmental and Fluid Process and Pumps. KWS provided a solution to last another 40 years with minimal maintenance and downtime.
Design Parameters
- Product Type: Dewatered Biosolids
- Material Density: 55 to 65 Lbs. per Cubic Foot
- Capacity: 1,600 Cubic Feet per Hour
- Duty: 24 hours per day, 7 Days per Week
KWS Advantages
KWS has an extensive successful history for solving problems at wastewater treatment facilities throughout the US. Engineers from KWS and Fluid Process and Pumps worked directly with Pivotal Engineering to write the specifications and create the layout for the new belt conveyor along with supports and chutes. A complete system with connections to the building were included in the design process.
KWS and Fluid Process and Pumps provided on-site training during installation and startup of the new belt conveyor. Training was provided by the KWS Project Manager and registered engineer familiar with the project and design requirements.
KWS Special Features
KWS provided a new 36-inch wide belt conveyor along with instrumentation and controls to transfer biosolids from the filter press to a load out area. The belt conveyor was designed and manufactured with a 304 stainless steel formed channel frame with belt scraper blade mounted to the side of the head pulley to scrap off material sticking to the belt. Carrying idlers were mounted on 4-foot centers for maximum support of the biosolids and belt. KWS also provided a drip pan spanning the full length of the belt conveyor to catch any liquids or solids that fall off the belt during biosolids transit.
KWS included a NEMA 4X zero-speed sensor and safety pull cable switch to protect personnel, equipment, and processes. When the zero-speed sensor detects a change in speed or zero speed, a signal is sent to a control panel to alert the operator of a malfunction. The safety pull cable switch can be activated by an operator if there is a potential safety or production issue, shutting down the belt conveyor.
Testimonial
"The new KWS belt conveyor installed easily and operates perfectly. The construction is very rugged, and the unit will last a long time. Thanks for making the project easy! We need more projects with KWS!"
