Dual-Action Stainless Steel Slide Gate for BP Cherry Point
Introduction
BP Cherry Point, located in Blaine, WA, is the largest refinery in the region and is a jet fuel supplier for both Seattle’s and Portland’s international airports. Industrial Service Solutions partnered with KWS for a special dual-action slide gate used in petroleum coke handling at the refinery.
Flowserve Electric Actuators Independently Operate Each Slide Plate
Challenge
Petroleum coke can be both abrasive and corrosive. Heavy duty 304 stainless steel construction was required for the application. Controlling the flow rate of petroleum coke with the gate was also important to the success of the project. BP requested a slide gate with two independently operated slide plates for reliable operation and process flexibility.
KWS Advantage
KWS designs and manufactures slide gates for difficult bulk material handling applications. The complete slide gate was constructed from 304 stainless steel including the gate rollers. The new slide gate was furnished with two slide plates operated independently by two Flowserve electric actuators. This dual action design allows BP Cherry Point to control each slide plate separately based on varying capacity requirements. The new slide gate installed easily and was operating successfully within 24 hours of delivery, making BP a very happy customer.
