What’s the difference between helicoid and sectional screw flighting?
Helicoid flighting is manufactured using coiled steel of varying widths and thicknesses. The process forms the metal between two cones, work hardening the flighting. The manufacturing process for helicoid flighting causes the base of the flight to be twice as thick as the tip. Helicoid flighting is formed to produce a continuous helix that matches CEMA standard screw lengths, so only one piece of flighting is required.
Sectional flighting is cut from flat plate on a CNC burn table, then formed to achieve a helical shape of consistent thickness. Each sectional flight covers approximately one revolution with butt welds every 360-degrees connecting individual flights together.
Helicoid and sectional screws are available in CEMA standard sizes of 4-inch through 18-inch diameter. Helicoid flighting and screws are most cost effective to produce but are limited by CEMA standard sizes. Sectional flighting and screws can be manufactured to any combination of OD, ID, pitch, thickness, and materials of construction.
