A poultry processor needed a reliable method for conveying chicken byproducts to inedible rendering. The existing partially submerged belt conveyor was poorly suited for the application. The material did not move consistently, splashing created housekeeping issues, and the conveyor was difficult to service. Frequent breakdowns reduced reliability in a demanding 24/7/365 production environment. KWS Technical Sales Manager visited the plant to review the existing operating conditions. The partially submerged belt conveyor was failing because wet chicken byproducts are difficult to control and hard to contain on an open belt. KWS recommended a screw conveyor to convey the material at a 20-degree incline. The KWS screw conveyor provided a much cleaner and more reliable solution. The enclosed tubular design contained the byproducts, improved housekeeping, and eliminated many of the service problems associated with the belt conveyor.
KWS Special Features
The KWS screw conveyor was designed for the difficult flow characteristics of chicken byproducts. External components were constructed from 304 stainless steel for corrosion resistance and easier sanitation in a poultry processing environment. A perforated 304 stainless steel liner section was included to help manage liquid in the product stream and improve conveying performance. Special 304 stainless steel wear bars were fitted inside the trough to protect the housing from wear and to allow a path for fluids to drain towards the perforated section. The enclosed screw conveyor eliminated product loss and provided a robust long-term solution for a very difficult application.
