General Description

GEO® Specialty Chemicals, Inc. is known as a world leader in providing high quality, cost-effective specialty chemicals. At the GEO location in Deer Park, Texas where Glycine is produced, a new plant was built to produce highly active polyaluminum chloride (PAC) products. This new plant will serve water treatment municipalities in need of improved, cost-effective solutions in clean water practices. The facility is operated by GEO’s Water Treatment Chemicals Division.

As part of a new process, KWS provided a system for conveying and elevating Aluminum Trihydrate to two vertical-shaft mixers or reactors. The Aluminum Trihydrate was fed to the system by a front-end loader, then screened through a SWECO screener. After screening, the bulk material was metered to a bucket elevator and elevated approximately 40-feet. At this point, the bulk material could then be diverted into either one of two reactors. KWS provided the complete system including structural supports.

Design Parameters

  1. Product Type – Aluminum Trihydrate (ATH) Powder
  2. Material Density – 45 Lbs. per Cubic Foot
  3. Capacity – 580 Cubic Feet per Hour
  4. Duty – 24 Hours per Day, 7 Days per Week

KWS Advantages

System for Conveying and Elevating Aluminum Trihydrate at GEO® Specialty Chemicals in Deer Park, TX - KWS

KWS and GEO worked closely together to develop the system from concept to reality. Every aspect of the project was custom and fully engineered. The complete system was constructed from heavy-duty 304 stainless steel. The Aluminum Trihydrate receiving hopper was designed for the width and height of the front-end loader and for maximum volume. The receiving hopper was constructed with added re-enforcement to withstand encounters with the front-end loader. A SWECO low-profile separator bolted to the bottom of the receiving hopper and screened off oversized particles. Engineers from KWS and SWECO worked together to ensure the customers’ needs were met. The screw feeder accurately metered the Aluminum Trihydrate to the bucket elevator and to the reactors.

Space constraints proved to be a challenge for KWS in the design phase, but all of the issues were overcome with the assistance of GEO. KWS modeled the complete system within the building in Autodesk Inventor 3D and fit the hopper, feeder and bucket elevator within the desired footprint. Engineers from KWS met with GEO personal several times during the design approval process to make sure GEO was completely satisfied.

Special Features

System for Conveying and Elevating Aluminum Trihydrate at GEO® Specialty Chemicals in Deer Park, TX - KWS

As a single-source provider, KWS saved GEO thousands of dollars by provided engineering, design and manufacturing of the conveying system for Aluminum Trihydrate. It was not necessary for GEO to bring in an outside consulting firm to provide engineering services and then try and locate multiple equipment suppliers for the various pieces of equipment.

KWS provided a rugged conveying system designed for the heavy industrial application. All of the equipment was manufactured from 304 stainless steel construction to withstand corrosion in a chemical-duty environment. The conveying system was completely assembled and tested at the KWS facilities before shipping to ensure proper fit-up and operation in the field.

Testimonial

"The KWS equipment was very well built and we were up and operating without any problems. I would recommend KWS to other GEO Specialty Chemical locations."
