General Description

The town of Simsbury, CT needed to expand the Environmental plant to accommodate increased demand. As part of the Environmental process, dewatered biosolids are discharged from two belt filter presses, then elevated and conveyed to loading bays where the biosolids are evenly distributed in either of two dumpsters. The proximity of the belt filter presses to the loading bays required that the vertical shaftless conveyors lift the biosolids immediately after discharging from the belt filter presses. KWS provided a very unique solution for the application. KWS Shaftless Conveyors are uniquely designed to convey biosolids vertically.

Design Parameters

  1. Product Type: Dewatered Biosolids or Sludge (Digested, Biological)
  2. Material Density: 50 to 60 Lbs. per Cubic Foot
  3. Capacity: 234 Cubic Feet per Hour
  4. Solids, Percent by Weight: 18-percent Solids

KWS Advantages

KWS provided a fully engineered system including complete system design as well as horizontal shaftless conveyors, vertical shaftless conveyors, slide gates, controls and instrumentation. Our experience with shaftless screw conveyors and, in particular, shaftless vertical conveyors was critical to the success of the project. All KWS equipment was designed and manufactured in the US. Startup services and on-site training were also provided. KWS provided significant experience with vertical shaftless conveyors to convey this type of material. The integrated system supplied by KWS interfaced with plant SCADA for ease of operation.

Special Features

The shaftless spiral is the critical component in all shaftless screw conveyors. The KWS-340 shaftless spirals have a hardness of 340-BHN and are the hardest and strongest spirals in the industry. They are designed to outlast any other shaftless spiral by at least a factor of 2. The vertical shaftless conveyors allowed for the system layout to be compressed, utilizing the limited space in the plant. Transitions between the horizontal conveyors and the vertical shaftless conveyor were eliminated. KWS also provided unique drip-tight slide gates to drain off any excess liquids and to ensure that each dumpster was loaded with high solids biosolids. The control system provided fully automatic loading of biosolids from the belt filter presses to the loading bays.

Testimonial

"We have had years of trouble-free service from this equipment. No issues with the equipment design or quality and we appreciate the knowledge and availability of the after-sales support. We are still using the original trough liners after seven years of operation."
