General Description

enviraPAC, Inc. has developed a proven, powdered activated carbon (PAC) product called enviraPAC Hg™ for the purpose of flue gas mercury sorption. PAC is an engineered carbon that has superior surface area and is used for the absorption of a wide variety of harmful chemical gasses produced at coal burning power plants, industrial boilers and cement kilns. enviraPAC’s activated carbon is specifically engineered to capture mercury emissions and is the only company in the world that can produce PAC in an environmentally friendly way. PAC is produced from biomass and has many advantages over traditional products including the endless supply of renewable feedstock and the environmental friendly impact of production and application.

Raw Resources Group, a division of Appalachian Coal Services provides engineering services to many diverse industries. Appalachian Coal Services provides equipment and services to the mining industry, as well as material handling and processing facilities for coal, sand, phosphates, aggregates, chemicals and pulp & paper. enviraPAC consulted Raw Resources to design and build a new plant in Monticello, AR for processing forestry biomass to produce Powdered Activated Carbon (PAC).

Raw Resources and KWS developed a solution for metering and conveying certain types of wood chips through a series of carbonizing dryers. The wood chips were processed at high temperature until a finished product was created. enviraPAC and Raw Resources needed a very reliable process with no downtime. KWS and Raw Resources met numerous times to build a great working relationship and to fully understand the needs of the process. KWS provided a complex system of inclined screw feeders and conveyors that would operate 24 hours per day and 7 days per week.

KWS Advantages

KWS worked with Raw Resources months in advance of the purchase of the equipment to determine the correct design that would meet their needs. The KWS engineering team collaborated with engineers from Raw Resources and other equipment suppliers to ensure proper design and t-up before manufacturing the equipment. These efforts made for seamless installation and performance in the eld.

KWS Special Features

The KWS inclined screw feeders and conveyors were designed to operate 24 hours per day, 7 days per week under constant load. The screws utilized abrasion-resistant materials (AR-400) and oversized center pipe and shafts. Variable pitch ighting was used in the inlet areas of the screw feeders to accurately meter the wood chips while on a steep incline. Also, internal hanger bearings were eliminated to reduce maintenance. Inspection doors were added to the equipment so the operators could monitor material ow. The gear reducers and bearings were located away from the corrosive, abrasive and high temperature bulk materials by use of KWS Torque Arm Trough Ends. The trough ends create a barrier that ensures the mechanical components are kept away from the potentially damaging bulk materials. The KWS inclined screw feeders and conveyors were designed for extra heavy-duty service to eliminate downtime and keep the process operating reliably and efficiently.

Testimonial

"It has been a pleasure working with KWS and the engineering team. Look for more projects like this one in the future."
