General Description

The Quantico WWTP services the US Marine Corp base as well as the town of Quantico and the surrounding area. Like many waste water treatment plants in the Chesapeake Bay watershed area, the Quantico WWTP has to meet the strict discharge limits set by the EPA and other state and local authorities. The US Marine Corp, which is responsible for the operation of the plant, has been proactive in meeting these increasingly more stringent output limits. The recent upgrade to the plant, which processed up to 2.2 MGD, serves to stay ahead of future environmental requirements, replace aging equipment, and reduce operator maintenance requirements. A part of this recent upgrade included an upgrade to the Biosolids loadout system. The upgrade added a KWS Environmental loadout screw conveyor to evenly fill dumpsters without operator intervention. The upgrade also moved the loadout location out of a floodplain, which has been required by environmental regulations. KWS Environmental is proud to be working with the US Marine Corp and such forward thinking vision.

KWS Advantages

Biosolids Load Out System for Quantico, VA WWTP - KWS

KWS Environmental designed, manufactured, supplied and commissioned a load out system that included an integrated shafted screw conveyor, slide gates and control system. Designed to fit in the limited space allowed by the up-steam equipment and dewatering building, the KWS shafted screw conveyor extended through the wall of the building to discharge to a dumpster. KWS designed the custom inlet transition between the existing belt conveyor and the new KWS screw conveyor. KWS worked closely with EMH Environmental to locate all instrument, lubrication points and conveyor drive unit to ease maintenance of the equipment.

KWS Environmental provided a local control panel that was integrated to the control system to allow for coordination of the conveyor with the up-steam equipment without the intervention of an operator. Complete with audible siren, flashing lights and multiple safety stop features, the conveyor control panel met all applicable OSHA standards.

Special Features

Biosolids Load Out System for Quantico, VA WWTP - KWS

As part of the biosolids load out system, KWS Environmental provided an integral-leg ribbon shafted screw conveyor. The integral leg ribbon screw was supported at bearing supports at each end of the screw conveyor and at one intermediate point. Shafted screw conveyors have an advantage over shaftless screw conveyors because there are no trough liners to wear out and replace. All of the bearing lubrication points were extended to a common point inside the dewatering building so all of the bearings can be lubricated in the cold winter months without interruption or hassle. The KWS Tor-Ri-Flex bearing was used to provide intermediate support of the screw sections without the expected short life of a typical friction bearing. The KWS Tor-Ri-Flex bearing will easily last the lifetime of the conveyor system. KWS pneumatic slide gates were used to evenly distribute biosolids and fill the dumpster, reducing operator intervention and the likelihood overfilling the dumpster.
