KWS Environmental Loadout System No. 5 – Pivoting Distribution Screw Conveyor Arrangement

A common application for disposal of sludge and grit/screenings is loading residuals into dumpsters or trucks for haulage to disposal. For many applications, the use of a pivoting screw conveyor for loading dumpsters or trucks is advantageous when compared to other conveying technologies.

A horizontal screw conveyor is located under multiple dewatering devices to convey residuals to an inclined or vertical screw conveyor. For any incline angle above 45-degrees a vertical conveyor is the best choice. The inclined or vertical screw conveyor transfers the residuals to a second horizontal screw conveyor. The second horizontal screw conveyor transfers the residuals to a single pivoting distribution screw conveyor. The pivoting distribution screw conveyor is mounted to a support column and centered between the two storage devices. The support column utilizes an integrated actuator to pivot the distribution screw conveyor slowly in an arc spanning the loading area of the dumpster or truck. As the distribution screw conveyor pivots about the axis of the support column, residuals are discharged and evenly load the dumpsters or trucks. The dumpsters or trucks remain in a fixed location while the residuals are loaded.

The KWS Environmental Loadout System No. 5 is a simple and effective method of transferring residuals from multiple dewatering devices to multiple dumpsters or trucks. The multiple loading bay arrangement is very versatile and allows for the use of multiple dewatering devices as well as vertical lifts up to 30-feet. The dumpster or truck loading stations can also be located long distances from the dewatering devices, depending upon plant layout. The system creates redundancy with the use of multiple dumpster or truck loading areas. Both shafted and shaftless screw conveyors are ideal for the application.

Features

Pivoting Mechanism – The pivoting mechanism for the distribution screw conveyor can utilize manual, electrical, hydraulic, or pneumatic actuation. The support column is designed to handle dynamic loading and the assembly is balanced for a fully loaded and pivoting screw conveyor.

System Redundancy – The pivoting distribution screw conveyor utilizes a forward or reverse flow direction to divert and discharge residuals to either loading bay or discharge point. The operator can choose the location of residual discharge, creating redundancy in the residual load out system.

Simplicity of Controls – Each screw conveyor and pivoting mechanism can be controlled using a main control panel or through interfaces from a remote panel or SCADA system. The multiple loading bay arrangement can be controlled automatically or manually, depending upon system requirements.

Benefits

Even Residual Loading – The pivoting distribution screw conveyor arrangement does not utilize a complicated load out arrangement. The actuation technology for the pivoting distribution screw conveyor can be selected based on existing needs and residual loading requirements.

System Redundancy – Redundancy in the load out system allows one dumpster or truck to be loaded while a full dumpster or truck is removed. If a particular load out bay is not functioning for any reason, the second bay is available for residual load out. Redundancy can also be designed into the system by adding duplicate transfer and vertical screw conveyors.

Operational Flexibility – The control system for the pivoting distribution screw conveyor arrangement can be capably handled with relay logic, decreasing cost and complexity. Multiple screw conveyors can be controlled from a single panel with timers and reversing starters, allowing more flexibility to set parameters such as forward/reverse operation and timing of the pivoting mechanism. Once the system is tested and the parameters are set, dumpsters or trucks can be evenly loaded with a minimum of operator oversight.
